Easy Herbal Tincture

- Know the availability of key herbs. Living nearby is best, if not, grow some if possible.
- Fill jar with four ounces (120 grams) of chopped or ground, dry herb that has a tight fitting lid (dark colored glass is best). This amount should be doubled if the fresh herb is used.
- Pour one pint (one-half liter) of 60 proof vodka on dry herbs, or 95% alcohol for fresh herb tinctures. Seal the lid tightly.
- Keep the container in a warm place for two weeks shaking it well, twice a day.
- After decanting most of liquid, pour the residue into muslin or tight cheesecloth fitted over a bowl.
- Wring out all the liquid. Compost the marc (the residue).
- Pour the tincture into a dark bottle and keep tightly sealed. Remember to label the bottle of its content and creation date. Keep finished tincture in a cool, dark place and the mixture should last indefinitely.
- Some liquid is absorbed by the herbs; therefore 16 oz. of alcohol results to 12 oz. of tincture.
METHODS FOR REMOVING THE ETHANOL ALCOHOL FROM EACH DOSE OF YOUR MEDICINE:
By extracting a plant's entire range of beneficial phytochemistries and concentrating them to a predetermined level, the resulting product retains its therapeutic chemistry identical to the original plants, yet prepared to a guaranteed potency every time.
1. The night before you need to take the herbs add all the next days doses to 20mls boiling purified or distilled water in a mug. Leave overnight and the alcohol will disappear/ evaporate away.
2. Each time you need a dose, first boil the purified or distilled water, add a small amount of the boiling water (20mls) to a mug, add your dose of herbs and leave it for 10 - 20 minutes and the alcohol will evaporate.
You can make it taste even better by adding some honey or by pouring the medicine after the ethanol has evaporated, into a small amount of fruit juice before drinking.
To make the liquid herbal medicines of European Herbal Medicine today, ethanol alcohol is used.Ethanol alcohol is a 95% proof alcohol distilled from sugar cane leftovers or grape seeds and skins. This is used with water to be used as the liquid solvent for blending the herbal plant matter into. This solvent mixture works to extract the medicinally active ingredients from the herb material into the liquid. Traditionally and historically brandy was used in the monasteries and the homes of the wealthy. And apple cider vinegar was used by the poor.
This method of making herbal medicines condenses the strength of the medicinally active ingredients and works to preserve the medicines. It also supports us to capture the energy of the plants into our herbal medicines. It supports us to choose the best quality plant material and to preserve this original energy in our medicines.
Ethanol alcohol can be toxic to the body and tastes pretty awful. Your body might not want any. In my practice we advise removing the alcohol from your medicines, because we do not want to risk distressing the bodies of adults or children.
